No More Gun Like Items for the Xbox LIVE marketplace

Starting from January 1, 2012, gun-like items will be completely eliminated from the Xbox LIVE marketplace.

New avatars made after this time will no longer be able to buy any gun-like item and carry them. However, old avatars that already carry guns and other gun-like weapons, which they have purchased in the past, can continue using them. Only new purchases for gun-like items will not be possible as the New Year comes.

This news has been affirmed by Ruczilla who is the community manager for Epic games. He said, “Heads up! Starting on Jan. 1, 2012, the Lancer and Hammerburst avatar items will no longer be available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace. If you’ve purchased the items prior to Jan. 1, you will be able to keep them.”

Due to this announcement for the phasing out of gun-like items, they have started getting sold out because buying them will not be possible when the clock strikes 12 on New Year’s Eve.

Since Xbox 360 is a popular gaming console for hardcore gamers, who usually reflect tough masculine avatars, gamers find it necessary to have their avatars carry guns. This new announcement has created another reason for gamers to  become infuriated with Xbox 360.

In the past, hardcore gamers already felt that they were ditched by Xbox LIVE when it released Kinect. Kinect was an Xbox LIVE controller mostly intended for casual gamers and child players. This uses the motion sensor technology which is similar to the one used for Wii.

Aside from the two avatar items mentioned by Ruczilla, Microsoft has not released yet what items that fall on the gun-like category. Therefore, the elimination of avatar items is not limited to the Lancer and Hammerburst. Other avatar items might just disappear when the New Year comes.

We just have to wait and see how this move will affect the loyal customer base of Xbox.
